        Frequently Asked Questions

Because poured-in-place foundations have been the norm for years, just thinking about switching over to precast foundations can raise questions. We've tried to address some of the most frequently asked questions about using Pole Base here, as well as on the pages of our website. If you have any unanswered questions, don't hesitate to reach out to your sales rep to get the answers you need!

        Ask An Expert

If I need a very specific bolt configuration, conduit layout, or dimensions for my light pole bases, can I get the exact base from you?

Absolutely. Every Pole Base product is made to order for that specific reason. We are capable of building foundations with diameters of 12, 18, 24, or 30 inches and ranging in height from 3.5 feet for taxiway bases to 13 feet for light pole bases. Conduit templates and bolt patterns are built according to your specifications, so customization is always possible. Check out the technical resources page for typical details and drawings.

        How heavy are these bases?

Pole Base products can range greatly in size, so the weight varies, too. Depending on your dimensions and the texture you select, your Pole Base precast foundations could range from 1,000 to 8,800 lb (453.6 to 3991.6 kg). Generally, bases with 18-in (457.2 mm) diameters range from 1,000 to 3,000 lb (453.6 to 1330.8 kg), bases with 24-in (609.5 mm) diameters range from 1,800 to 5,800 lb (816.5 - 2630.8 kg), and bases with 30-in (762 mm) diameters range from 2,800 to 8,800 lb (1270 - 3991.6 kg). If you're looking to narrow in on the weight of bases for your project, reach out to your sales rep for further insight!

What kinds of equipment could I use to inventory and install these bases?

You'll need a forked piece of equipment to offload your bases from the delivery truck and then stage on your jobsite. From there, the Pole Base lifting plate makes it easy to install the bases with a variety of equipment such as a forklift, excavator, loader, skytrack, crane, or boom truck. If you're curious just how easy Pole Base is to install, watch our installation video!

How much does it cost to ship these bases to the site?

Shipping costs are calculated on a project-by-project basis to give you the best possible rate. Fill out the "Get a Quote" form with the details of your project to get the most accurate shipping estimate from your sales rep!

How long does it take to install these bases?

Installing a precast foundation for your project's site lighting, sign foundation, or taxiway base will be significantly faster with Pole Base than with alternative methods. Installing a Pole Base product generally takes 30 minutes to 1.5 hours per base, depending on soil conditions and how long it takes to dig the hole. Visit the installation overview page to see how easy it is to auger, place, and backfill.

What textures or looks are available in your product line?

Pole Base offers multiple combinations of shape and texture for precast foundations, and you can get further customization from there. Check out our texture page to see what look would match your project best!

What is the lead time on Pole Base products?

Pole Base products are built to your specifications, so lead time will vary from project to project. Typically for light pole bases, J-bolts are sent to the Pole Base production facilities from the electrical contractor, and the Pole Base team builds the bases according to the specification from there, which usually takes about two to four weeks. Your best bet is to reach out to your sales rep to get an idea about the timing for your request.

Do you have products other than light pole bases?

We sure do. Pole Base is a versatile product that can be used for precast foundations in a number of applications. In addition to light pole bases, Pole Base has already been used for columns, sign foundations, gazebo and carport bases, even flagpoles and specialty pipe supports at breweries. Curious if Pole Base could be used in a unique application on your next project? Contact your sales rep for details today!

How deep does my base need to be to ensure stability?

It depends on local engineering requirements due to soil type, pole size and weight and fixture size. Consult your project documents or local engineer.

What tools and equipment do I need to install Pole Base?

Any machinery that can handle the weight and size requirements of the Pole Base, such as a Skid Steer, mini excavator, backhoe, sky track line truck, or loader. You’ll need an auger attachment to excavate for each Pole Base installation.

What’s the Process of Getting Pole Base for Your Next Site Lighting Project?

Pole Base is manufactured by various independently owned and operated companies across the United States and Canada. For comprehensive insight into the procedures involved in designing, purchasing, and installing Pole Base precast light foundations, click here.

Is a Pole Base Light Foundation a Better Choice than a Universal Base?

Pole Base light pole foundations and universal bases (occasionally called "pre-engineered") share similarities. Each provides a product that can be transported to your location and set up on the same day, allowing you to sidestep potential weather-related challenges and the inconvenience of coordinating a ready-mix truck delivery for pouring labor-intensive, time-consuming cast-in-place bases. Learn more about the differences here.

How Does Pole Base Perform in High Winds?

Pole Base excels in areas prone to strong winds, such as Florida and other coastal regions. Design and installation guidelines for Pole Base are formulated considering wind speeds of 90 mph (40 m/s) over three seconds at a height of 33 ft (10 m) above ground level. Engineers can seamlessly customize Pole Base units for your project to accommodate site-specific wind loads, even for exceptionally high loads when necessary.
